U.S. East Coast congestion hindering trans-Atlantic trade
Stability on the trans-Atlantic trade continues to be undermined by full container terminals in Northern Europe and the U.S. East Coast. Additionally, constantly shifting vessel schedules and persistently low on-time performance are also impacting stability. Therefore, new bottlenecks will make the U.S. East Coast the next hotspot for high congestion.
U.S. consumer demand continues to drive record import volumes. Additionally, roughly two years of disruption at West Coast ports has led to shippers calling to the East Coast, adding to the mounting congestion.
Manufacturing orders down, prices up
March is typically the biggest month of the year for new orders as companies stock inventory for summer and fall. Demand remains strong, with inventories remaining low for the 20th straight month.
Procurement teams continue to face inflated prices, difficulty procuring raw materials, and extended lead times. Therefore, last month, some decided to pause to see if conditions would improve.
According to the Institute for Supply Management’s monthly Manufacturing Business Survey, the top-of-mind issue for supply managers in March was rising prices. Additionally, 75% of respondents said they raised prices in March, up from 56% in February.
CA ports look inland for short-term container storage
With U.S. import volumes from Asia expected to rise, and near-dock container storage close to capacity, the ports of LA, LB, and Oakland are pushing importers and exporters to use six inland sites for temporary container storage.
The six sites will be used as staging areas for import containers until they are needed at distribution warehouses. Additionally, export boxes will be held until the terminals are ready to load them onto vessels.
